On 20 June 2007 we finalized the adoption of our two kids, Mariah and Malachi, who had been living with us since 21 February 2006. For the kids it wasn't a big deal, because we had told them from the start that we were their forever-family, and never talked much about the finalization procedure. Nevertheless, they had to dress up and appear in front of Judge Thomas Carnes at the Probate Court of Portage County, Ohio. The judge was happy enough to pose for pictures, and - upon personal request - let Mariah inspect his chambers. This was to the envy of the present lawyers, who had never enjoyed that privilege! Afterwards we went for Chinese food together with our social workers Bev and Cary, and in the afternoon threw a big garden party with friends and neighbors. For the kids the highlight was their new play fort that had been built earlier in summer by Dad and Granddad.
