Sagittarius grass (Sagittaria subulata)
Obviously this is not going to be the prettiest picture of Sagittarius grass you are going to find, but it gives you an impression what this plant can look like in a cichlid tank. This plant has actually seen better days, and the fish don't even dig it out, but dump loads of sand on it all the time, so that I have to keep on digging it up, for it to get some light. It's alive, and in time it will grow some nicer runners again, but a carpet like you see in a high-tech planted tank will never happen.
Sagittarius grass is another plant I picked up from Pete Mang's store (The Fish Place, 141 Robinson Street, N. Tonawanda NY). The only reason I bought it was that Pete was out of dwarf valisneria at the time, and he recommended it. Apparently in high-tech, high-light tanks it's leaves can become over 1' in length, but in my setup they barely reach 1". Unfortunately I planted my Sagittarius grass in an area where my fronts like to dig, so it's been a far cry from forming a carpet. However, I have a solid track record of killing any other grass-like aquarium plant within a few weeks, and after two years this stuff is still alive although not well.
